Wisdom Teeth – The Problem

The wisdom tooth (or third molar) is the very last to erupt into the mouth and this usually happens from about 18 years of age. For most people there is not enough room in the mouth to allow normal eruption. Wisdom teeth can become impacted onto the tooth in front or backwards into the jaw bone. This can lead to frequent infections in the area immediately surrounding the wisdom tooth and results in constant episodes of pain. If left untreated this infection can spread into the blood stream resulting in significant health problems. Additionally, decay can also form in the adult tooth that sits in front of the wisdom tooth and this tooth may be lost as well.

The Procedure – What is involved

Often the wisdom tooth has not erupted into the mouth and it is necessary to expose the wisdom tooth first. Occasionally, the bone surrounding the wisdom tooth also needs to be gently removed. Sometimes the tooth needs to be divided into multiple pieces in order to remove it. If the wound is wide open then we need to place stiches to achieve closure and these will dissolve away after about one week.
