Sleep Dentistry

At Brookwater Dental we take pride in having friendly dentists who can offer caring dentistry in the chair in a relaxing environment. For some procedures and for certain patients however, we are happy to be able to offer treatment under General Anesthesia (GA). Under GA you will be put to sleep for the entire procedure and not feel a thing. We have been doing this for years and have treated many happy patients this way.

Before going under General Anesthesia a thorough consult with x-rays is required (GAP free for those with private health) to determine what treatment is required. Once this is established we will organize a time and date at our local Ipswich Day Hospital where one our accredited dentists will perform the treatment for you. Our staff will aim to make to entire process as smooth and easy for you as possible.

Getting treatment under General Anesthesia is often beneficial for the following cases:

  • Anxious Patients – although we do our best to make everyone feel comfortable some patients are simply too nervous to get any work done in the chair. Rather than avoiding the dentist and allowing everything to get worse we recommend you simply book in for an exam. After this we can treat all your problems in the one go while you sleep.
  • Difficult Procedures – while most patients are fine to get treatment done in the chair there are some more complex producers eg. Impacted wisdom teeth which are often a lot more comfortable to have done while asleep. While this is not always necessary we are happy to go through the pro’s and con’s of treatment in the chair verses under GA and let you decide.
  • Complex Work – finally there are times when a lot of work is required. Rather than having several visits in the chair which can mean numerous days of work and multiple periods of healing we would recommend getting all the work done in one go without feeling a thing.

If you have any further questions or would like to book in for a consult please do not hesitate to call us on (07) 3709 3702.

IV Sedation

If dental anxiety has been preventing you from getting the treatment you need, IV sedation can help you feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable throughout your appointment.

IV sedation is recommended for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety, those undergoing longer or more complex procedures, or anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed treatment experience.

Unlike most dental clinics, at our clinic IV sedation is provided by a qualified Anaesthetist (along with his assistant nurse), who administers and monitors the sedation throughout your procedure. The sedation medication is delivered through a small cannula placed in your arm and works quickly to create a deeply relaxed, drowsy state.

Most patients remember very little to nothing of their procedure and report feeling comfortable throughout their appointment.

Benefits of IV Sedation

  • Deep relaxation throughout treatment
  • Little to no memory of the procedure
  • Fast-acting medication that can be adjusted during treatment
  • Ideal for patients with dental anxiety or phobia
  • Suitable for longer or more complex dental procedures

Before your appointment, a consultation is required to determine whether IV sedation is suitable for you. You may also need to fast before your procedure, and you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you afterwards.

As our IV sedation is administered by a qualified Anaesthetist, Medicare rebates will apply. For more information on IV sedation please visit the website of our friendly Anaesthetic team – Asleep Dentistry.
